Mexican manufacturers want higher tariffs on Chinese imports

Footwear industry body CICEG (the footwear industry association of the state of Guanajuato) is preparing to ask the Mexican government to increase to 35% the tariff imposed on shoe imports into Mexico from China.

CICEG has released details of a request that it will submit to the federal economics ministry asking for the increase.

Mexico imposed anti-dumping measures on shoes from China at the start of 2012, with the tariffs ranging from 25% to 30% depending on the type of shoe. However, under the existing agreement, the rate is set to fall to 20% at the start of 2013.

In spite of the measures already in place, which include an agreement between the two governments on minimum pricing for different types of footwear, CICEG says imports from China increased in volume by 210% in the nine months to September 2012 compared to the same period in 2011. It insists that, in some instances, Chinese suppliers and importers in Mexico have ignored the minimum-pricing agreement. It is for this reason that it wants the tariffs to go up rather than down.

This is really bad news for chinese shoe industry, shoe & shoe materials supplier in China. And other shoe materials such as cambrelle, microfiber, insole board, shoe stiffeners, shoe linings, etc, all these materials would be affected much.

Cambrelle boosts Timberland's green credentials

With sustainability rising up corporate agendas, Camtex Fabrics, the maker of Cambrelle shoe linings, has introduced fabrics with increased recycled content – as favoured by Timberland for its Earthkeeper range.

With its Earthkeeper shoes, boots and clothing, Timberland Cambrelle Lining is trying to “reduce its impact on the planet and make better gear” – and so needed a shoe lining that would fit with its goals.

“Timberland asked us to develop a fabric that had at least 50% recycled content,” explained Camtex Fabrics Cambrelle shoe linings chief executive Kieran O'Hare, “so we used a polyester product that comes from recycled polyester bottles.”

Camtex Cambrelle Fabrics is currently researching and creating innovative fabrics that have increased recycled or sustainable content, coming from certifiable sources, and can help its clients boost their environmental credentials.

“Lots of companies are now trying to show the customer that they are not consuming as much energy as they once did; they’re using materials from sustainable sources or materials that are recycled – and this is something we can help them with,” added Mr O'Hare.

Intersport to acquire The Athletes Foot

Berne-based Intersport has reached an agreement with current owner Global Franchise Group to acquire sports footwear retail brand The Athletes Foot (TAF).

TAF currently has 430 franchisee-owned stores in 27 countries, including the US, Mexico, Peru, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand.

Upon the completion of this acquisition, Intersport will expand its global footprint to 63 countries and create opportunities for its current licensees to open TAF franchise stores.

On announcing the agreement, Intersport chief executive, Franz Julen, said: “Geographically, TAF is an ideal complement, immediately providing the company with a presence in 63 countries, instead of the current 41. While we were in a strong global position, especially in Europe, the acquisition allows us to move into the lucrative markets of the US, Australia, Indonesia and New Zealand, take advantage of the potential of the emerging countries in South America, and strengthen our existing position in Asia and the Middle East.”
